Your Pre-Mastering Checklist
After
mixing your tracks, record the tracks / music on GOOD
High Quality CD, in Real Time, 1X.
Listen to the CD on your
home stereo (and to do another re-evaluation check on the mixed
tracks).
Listen to the mixes with closed eyes and focus
on the :
- LOW END, Listen to how the bass and kick another
instruments sound.
- MIDS, Listen
to the vocals and instruments, and also hear if the
vocals are clean and not buried in the mix.
-
HIGHS, Listen to the high ends, cymbals, high hats,
etc.
Listen for
Pops, SSs, Distortion, etc.
Pay
attention to the clarity of the entire mix as now you are
hearing it on a home stereo system with its EQs ON. Listen if it
sounds good on the home stereo system. If not, make a note of each
track / song, and what you want to change, eg., bring up / sharpen /
Re-EQ the kick, bass, vocals, background
vocals, or any other instrument tracks. Go
back, Remix and Fix this.
Don't use any Normalizer, Finalizer, Compression or EQ on the Entire Mix.
We will be dealing with this, and it will be much easier if the mix hasn't already been processed.
What to BRING / SEND for MASTERING..
Record
on a high quality CD eg., HHB, Quantegy etc.
Record the tracks in Real Time, 1X speed if you can (If possible
try using a good quality CD burner).
Listen to the CD
to check that there are no glitches, distortions (wow and
flutter = like a background rustle) etc.
Try not to play
this CD so as to keep it safe from scratching.
Try to
bring the first generation of the recorded material - a dat, first CD
given to you by the studio you mixed in. (If possible, try NOT to
bring a 3rd or 4th generation copy from a copy since the quality of
the sound can be degraded)
*Also bring a reference CD that you want your Mastered CD to sound like..
